Water running down an outside wall can look like a roof leak even when the problem is a blocked or damaged gutter. The reverse is also true: an apparent gutter problem can involve the roof edge or flashing above.

Watch where the water goes

From a safe place at ground level during rainfall, note whether water overflows the gutter, drips from a joint or appears behind the fascia. This often helps clarify the repair request.

Why gutter problems can look like roof leaks

Gutters collect large amounts of water from the roof. When a gutter is obstructed, misaligned or leaking at a joint, water can spill against the fascia or down an external wall. It may leave internal damp marks close to the eaves, creating the impression of a fault higher up the roof.

Signs to compare

  • Water visibly spilling over the gutter during rain: Guttering and downpipes are sensible starting points.
  • Drips beneath a gutter joint: A leaking joint or seal is possible.
  • Water entering near a ceiling away from the outer wall: A roof-covering or junction fault may need investigation.
  • A dry-weather drip from a pipe: An internal or plumbing source should not be ruled out.

A simple observation that helps

Watch the gutter from a safe place at ground level during rain. Does water overflow from one point, fail to reach the downpipe or run behind the fascia? A short video can help a contractor understand the pattern. Never climb a ladder or reach from a window to clear debris yourself.

Which MyJobQuote category might fit?

If the visible issue is clearly overflowing or leaking guttering, Roofers → Guttering and Rainwater Pipe is a useful category to start with. If the problem appears to involve the roof covering itself, Roof Repair is a better starting point. If you cannot tell, describe the uncertainty and ask for an inspection.

What to include in a quote request

Say whether the issue happens in heavy rain, where water spills, how high the gutter is and whether the downpipe seems involved. A roofer can then assess safe access and distinguish cleaning, re-fixing, joint repair and replacement.

Common questions

Can blocked gutters cause damp inside?

Overflowing water can repeatedly wet a wall or fascia and contribute to damp. Other causes may also be present.

Is gutter cleaning the same as gutter repair?

No. Clearing debris may help a blocked gutter, whereas a broken joint or damaged length may need repair or replacement.
